Uttaran Das Gupta is an independent writer and journalist who lives and works in New Delhi and Birmingham. He has published a book of poems, Visceral Metropolis (Red River, 2017), and a novel, Ritual (Pan Macmillan, 2020). His journalistic work has been published in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Senses of Cinema, Words Without Borders, Himal Southasian, Indian Express, Times of India, Hindustan Times, Mint, Outlook, The Telegraph, Scroll.in and several other publications. He has written a column, Frames per Second, on the intersection of politics and popular cinema for Business Standard since 2017, and another one on Indian English poetry, Verse Affairs, for The Wire, from 2020 to 2024. His journalism has been recognised by the Robert Bosch India-Germany Media Fellowship in 2018 and the Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship in 2019. In 2016, he was awarded a residency by Sangam House, India, and in 2027, he will be at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany. At present, he is working on a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies at Birmingham City University in the UK.
