The Last DVD is an online-only journal for films, founded in India but looking at world cinema at large.
We are named after the ritual of film-watching that defined the last decade – the practice of waiting for the latest film to be distributed to film stores and retail outlets, the excitement of switching our TVs from cable to DVD, of having characters, stories, and poetry come alive in our living rooms. Through our journal, we wish to evoke the same anticipation, the same quiet passion for films.
We love movies – new and old, Indian or not, the art house-y, the kitschy, the masala, and the classics. We want to build a home where people can walk in and talk about how much they love that obscure docu-film or the ways in which the cinema of Wong Kar Wai saved their life. We want to memorialise films, the medium’s legends and novices, and what cinema does to us and for the human experience. We want to build a space where it is possible to hold intelligent, long-form conversations at a time when creation has been replaced by consumption. We hope you join us.
